The National Park of Tiveden The national park preserves the untouched remainder of Tiveden, one of southern Sweden's wildest forests. It is a hilly, rocky area, strewn with giant boulders. The park is located in the most inaccessible part of the forest, the part known as Trolltiven. Nevertheless, it is not as untouched as would appear at first glance. Shifting cultivation, charcoal making and felling have all taken place. But there have never been any habitations in the forest. Tiveden contains several beautiful unspoilt lakes in which game fish have been introduced. There are also impressive giant boulders, some up to 10 metres high, carried here by the retreating ice sheet. There are also several caves in the park, of which Stenkälla from heathen times, is the best known. Tivedsleden, a minor road open to traffic, passes through the area. There are several trails, although the terrain is fairly demanding. |
